The Propulsion System

Ford offers two powertrains in the 2022 Explorer. The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder that delivers 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Ford Explorer performance goes to the next level with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that creates 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque.

Both Ford Explorer engines come with a ten-speed automatic transmission for plenty of acceleration off the line and smooth shifting while on the road.

The fuel economy rating in the 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine is an EPA-estimated 21/28 MPG, while the V6 engine delivers an EPA-estimated 18/26 MPG. The standard drivetrain is rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is available on several trims.

Safety and Infotainment Technology

The 2022 Ford Explorer interior includes several comfort and tech features. The entry-level Explorer has an 8.0-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, two USB ports, and six speakers. The Timberline has similar features but adds off-road performance upgrades like standard four-wheel drive and skid plates.

The ST trim is another performance model that includes the ST-Line styling and tech features but adds the V6 engine. This trim has a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The King Ranch combines the ST performance features with the Limited tech features. Finally, the Platinum trim includes luxurious interior features and tech features like Park Assist and Adaptive Headlights.
